Milky Goodness

Erin Tells me all about Milky Goodness...

A chance meeting led to this review. No, I was not looking for breastfeeding biscuits, however I knew several friends that were looking for a great one. So, when I was asked to review a boobie biscuit I thought why not!?
In general - it looks like you would be crazy NOT to have these in your life if you are a breastfeeding Mumma. They taste amazing, in convenient 2 biscuit packs, you are supporting a fellow local mumma and they are filled with homed made ingredients and of course love (which I am sure means there are 0 calories?). We found that these biscuits suited different tastes, diet restrictions and husbands even noticed the 'prettiness' of the packaging! Overall has started off amazingly well on her first mission - to help other Mum on their breast feeding journey...

The public verdict?
In general LOVE, LOVE, LOVVVVE!

I tasted three flavours, all super yummy, they didn't carry the aftertaste that most I have tried before (even ones I had made). Obviously, I could not comment on the effectiveness of milk supply increase so I found four local (lovely) Mum's who are breast feeding. Generally all four Mum's found the packaging difficult to open, however Bec says this has now been changed so now it is easier to eat these delicious treats!

I ate one pack a day, as in two biscuits. I ate them in the afternoon around 4pm with a cup of tea.
I'm on a very strict, clean diet due to health reasons and because of this diet, I am very sensitive now to sugar or sweets and they usually don't sit well in my tummy but these DID sit well!! I was pleased actually cos they tasted so good that I wanted to keep enjoying them as my arvo treat.

I usually have very soft breasts/lower supply for the bedtime feed and I'm not kidding when I say day one after eating these biscuits, I was definitely feeling fuller for that feed. I actually thought I must have been imagining it because I was unsure that two biscuits could make much of a difference. I continued eating them daily and have changed nothing else in my very strict diet and have noticed a difference in firmness/supply for the night time feed! So they really did work for me!

Flavour is great. Very yummy.
Thanks for delivering me some. I also love supporting local businesses and will gladly spread the word to all my breastfeeding friends.

Nat says...
I ate 2 per day at the start of the second feed for the day to increase my supply in the late afternoon. I think there was a small increase because I didn't feel empty in the evening.

I think these ones have a good balance of flavours. I've had the ones in the tin by franjos kitchen. Flavour wise they're both good. I like that these cookies are not dry. I think the brewers yeast flavour is a bit more prominent in these biscuits compared to franjos kitchen.
I'd definitely buy them if they are affordable, use healthy ingredients and have a range of flavour to choose from. Thanks for the opportunity to try these cookies. They're yummy!

Laura says…
The cookies tasted yummy!! I ate 2 the first day then one each day for the next 3 days. I'm at a point in feeding where I don't really need to increase my supply so it's hard to say if they did or not. However I ended up with 2 bags so I gave one to a friend of mine who'd just had a baby (really traumatic birth experience) and her milk still hadn't come in after 5 days. She started eating the cookies and her milk came in and made life SO much easier for her.
All in all a great product and I wish her well!

Sian says...
I ate 1 pack a day. I ate them about 1pm with a cup of tea each day. It's my time when both kids are down for naps and I can sit down and relax for the first time since getting up. I also liked to eat them hoping it would increase my supply for my 4pm and 7pm feeds which usually are a bit lower in supply. It's hard to tell exactly if there was a true increase but I recently had mastitis, felt my supply had dropped and Maggie went 5 days without a solid nappy. Within 2 days of eating the bickies we were back to daily poo’s. I haven't attempted to make my own cos ain't nobody got time for that but I have tried Pinky McKay's Boobie Bickies. At $24.95 I thought they were a bit exy but they did do the trick. In comparing these Milky Goodness cookies I prefer them. They taste more home made than manufactured ones and I liked the choc bits. I also like the idea of supporting mums in business rather than something a bit more mass market.

The only other thing I could add is that I love the flavour and the feeling like I was having a treat when eating these. I've also been getting into 'healthy' baking would be great to see some sugar, dairy, gluten free versions, and I'm sure they could still taste good too.

The Interview with business founder, local mum and an all round super human - Bec Tischler from now the successful Milky Goodness

The day you decided to launch...
28th of November 2016 was the first time I advertised my cookies - this was pre Milky Goodness. I was just a mum offering some home baked goodies.

I had that many messages about them & someone asked if I could bake some more for them... then as they say, the rest is history.

What made you decide to jump in?
I really enjoy baking & I found the lactation cookies really helped me so I wanted to help others.

Tell us your Story...
After having difficulties producing milk for my 2nd daughter I looked into Lactation Cookies. On a single wage household I wasn't inclined to purchase all those expensive other cookies so I decided to bake for myself.

Once I knew they worked so well I offered them to other mums via Facebook. A competitive price on top of a home made product, I thought this was going to benefit many other mothers in a similar situation.

Whats your favourite flavour?

I personally like these flavours & originally baked for myself. They seem to be a real hit with everyone. Choc Chip being the most popular. However everyone's taste is different so I also offer custom made flavours.

What has been your best decision since launching Milky Goodness?

My packaging has been the best decision. I continued to tweek it along the way. I'm very happy with how my cookies are packaged now.
Paired in heat sealed bags which allow for months of freshness. This also allow for a pair to be put into a hand bag or nappy bag and is a quick & easy snack throughout the day.

A bump in the road: on the same note my packaging has been a bump in the road. I originally had my cookies in heat shrink bags. After personal use & feedback I found this was no long a practical option and had changed it. But I still wanted to have an extended shelf life for my cookies.

Coupled with this, simply starting a business from home. I had been in the work force for many years & over the past 2.5years I have been a stay at home mum raising 2 little girls. The entire running a business was new to me and I am still continuing to learn new things.

What's next?
Next thing I want to focus on is producing Milky Goodness on a larger scale. My focus will be on building the business & the quantity I produce. I want to be able to help as many mothers as possible continue their Breastfeeding journeys.

Osso Bucco - quick and Delicious

Osso Bucco into "Spag Bol" 2 meals - whoo hoo!

As promised I have actually cooked AND made two meals from one!

It has been so miserable I decided to cook something warming. This is a great meal to cook in bulk to freeze or make quickly. Super great to chuck in the slow cooker and turn on before you leave in the morning so you come home and TADARRRR dinner is cooked (you super human you!). This is one of those meals that make you feel like you are ON fire, nailing life as it looks like so much love and care went into it, when in actual fact it takes little effort and really showcases "ish" cooking ("ish" cooking = when you didn't really have the ingredients and end up either substituting most or all of the ingredients or adding more of one thing as that's what you like!). I promise not to be offended if you add (more wine) or change it up - I encourage you to be your own "ish" chef!

Basically the ingredients are:
Dash of olive oil
1 kg (about 4 pieces of osso bucco) thanks Chop
Brown onion diced
2 (ish) cloves of garlic
1 stalk of celery chopped
1 carrot chopped
1 small eggplant chopped
1 red capsicum chopped T of tomato paste
1/2 Cup (ish) of wine - red or white it doesn't matter!
1-1/2 Cups of stock (whatever you have)
1/2 Cup water
1 Can crushed tomatoes
1-2 Sprigs of rosemary (throw in whole it saves you time!)

Lets make life easy...

Put olive oil in a deep based saucepan and brown the meat.
Remove meat and brown the onion. Add garlic, celery, carrot, capsicum, eggplant. cook for a couple of minutes and then add everything else. Stir!

Add the meat in and simmer away. it will be cooked in 40 mins, however the longer you leave it the better. I was at home all day so had it simmering away for about 4 hours.

Served with rissoni with a splash of lemon and parsley!

Total Cost per serve (4 adults) $4.50
Time anywhere from 40 mins - 4 hours
Prep time about 10 mins

Turn the leftovers into.....

Osso Bucco Style Bolognese

Cooked in less than one episode of the Wiggles :)

Ever feel like the standard "bol" is boring? Don't waste your left over osso bucco sauce add it to your spag bol to make it a bit special. I literally cooked this up in less than 10 mins in the morning between making breakfast (I know this because I started when the Wiggles came on and was finished before it ended!

Onion diced
Garlic to taste
2-4 bacon diced
1kg mince
1 can diced tomatoes
Any fresh herbs (basil, parsley) a hand full diced
Left over osso bucco sauce
I threw in some left over cherry tomatoes
Slat and pepper to taste

Pan fry onion, garlic and bacon  and mince and cook up. Add the rest!

This will serve 4 adults with enought for 2 lunches (6 serves)
Cost per serve $2.50
Total time 10 mins! plus cooking time to ensure the deliciousness!
